Abstract
A time-of-flight mass spectrometer has been coupled with an atomic beam of barium and a source of monochromated synchrotron radiation in order to determine the ratio of double-to-single photoionisation cross sections in the wavelength range 620-490 AA. The region around 584 AA, which produces an anomalously high value of the ratio, has been investigated in detail. The experiment appears to pose as many questions as it answers. Keywords
