Abstract
Rabies immune rabbit serum was produced by intracut. immunization with live fixed rabies virus. Protective antibody was concentrated from serum by precipitation with 16% Na2SO4. Immune serum protected mice and guinea pigs against infection with either street or fixed virus peripherally administered up to 72 hrs. after virus inoculation. Best results were obtained if serum was injected- at the site of virus inoculation. Serum alone given in one dose consistently gave greater protection than a series of vaccine prophylactic inoculations. In prophylaxis after inoculation of street virus, a combination of one dose of serum with a series of vaccine injns. was better than either one alone. An interval of 6 days between the serum dose and the beginning of the vaccine series gave the best results.
