Abstract
A new strain of R. gelatinosa (Siegel. J. M. and M. D. Kamen, Jour. Bact., 59; 693-697. 1950) converts acetone quantitatively to insoluble cell material. Possible intermediates in this conversion (including isopropyl alcohol as the precursor of acetone) were investigated by the method of simultaneous adaptation. The photosynthetic conversions of isopropyl alcohol, acetone, and acetoacetic acid to cell material were shown to be governed by adaptive enzymes. The expts. on simultaneous adaptation indicated that, during the photometabolism of acetone by R. gelatinosa. acetone condenses with CO2 to form acetoacetic acid. Keywords
