Abstract
Steroids react with acid reagents to produce compounds possessing intense absorption bands in the visible and ultraviolet spectral regions. These bands have been correlated with the existence of specific chemical groups in the steroid molecule. An attempt has been made to deduce the type of resonant system responsible for the absorption of light, in order to present a unified explanation of this type of steroid color reaction. The results indicate that the steroid nucleus, through induction or resonance effects, permits intercoupling between specific groups at the C3, C11, and C17positions in a particular environment. Keywords
