Abstract
The mechanics of breathing has been determined in 21 normal subjects during resting spontaneous ventilation in the sitting position, by using pneumotachography and oesophageal balloon technique. The respiratory work and power were derived with an analogue computer technique and recorded continuously. The work was 0.16 kpm/mm for men and 0.23 kpm/min for women. These values agree with those of earlier investigations and can be regarded as normal values for the technique used. Keywords
