Abstract
The 30S[image] and 50S[image] ribosomal subunits ("native" 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits), unlike normal 30S and 50S subunits, do not form 70S ribosomes in the presence of 0.01 [image] Mg++. These subunits, form polysomes and carry out poly U-dependent polyphenylalanine synthesis in-vitro when provided with other necessary components for protein synthesis. The 30S[image] subunits can bind phenylalanyl tRNA specifically in the presence of poly U. Ribosomal proteins in these subunits are indistinguishable from that in normal 30S and 50 S subunits. The 30S[image] and 50S[image] subunits appear to be the precursors of the normal ribosomes.
