Abstract
The statistical uncertainty in the calculation of velocity autocorrelation functions and self-diffusion coefficients from molecular dynamics is empirically determined from the spread of the molecular-dynamics results for an ensemble of macroscopically identical systems. The ‘‘experimental’’ uncertainties of the velocity-autocorrelation-function values at equilibrium and in the presence of flow agree well with theoretical predictions. The uncertainty of the self-diffusion coefficient is found to decrease as the inverse square root of the averaging time. Keywords
