Optically probed microwave resonances in negative ions

Abstract
An optical technique for observing transitions between stable levels of negative ions is described and illustrated by the observation of microwave Zeeman transitions in trapped negative sulfur ions. State-selective photodetachment is used to prepare and probe the magnetic states of the trapped ions while applied microwave fields cause transitions between the states. These Zeeman transitions are the first reported observations of microwave transitions in a negative ion by a readily generalized technique.
