Abstract
Ss in 4 groups learned a 9‐element vibrotactile code in which there were 3 intensities and 3 durations of signals. The durations of signals were varied over groups to determine whether at least 1 group of Ss would be unable to learn the code due to the brevity of the signals. There were no significant differences between the groups over 10 of the signals. There were no significant differences between the groups over 10 trials although durations ranged from 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 sec. for Group 1 to 0.01, 0.18 and 0.36 sec. for Group 4. The data suggested that it may be possible to shorten signals durations in a practical vibrotactile conmmunication system provided interstimulus intervals are carefully selected.
