Mechanisms for Multiple Ionization of Atoms by Strong Pulsed Lasers

Abstract
It is shown that substantial ionization during the rise of the pulse of a strong laser is inevitable. Thus only multiply charged ions are likely to be exposed to fields above W/. The behavior of the -photon generalized cross section for and its connection to tunneling are discussed.
