Intestinal cryptosporidiosis acquired from a cat

Abstract
A case of intestinal cryptosporidiosis in an eight-year-old boy is presented. The patient became ill during a visit to a farm where diarrhoea in newborn calves is a recurrent problem. Furthermore, on that farm kittens periodically suffer from diarrhoea and failure to thrive. Oocysts ofCryptosporidium sp. were identified in the stool of the patient, and in the stool of the cat he had contact with. At that time the calves were not infected. The patient's gastrointestinal symptomatology consisted of severe diarrhoea, vomiting, colics and moderate dehydration, and was preceded by coughing. Wir berichten über einen Fall von intestinaler Kryptosporidiose bei einem achtjährigen Jungen. Die Krankheit brach während des Besuchs auf einem Bauernhof aus, auf dem häufig Probleme mit Durchfällen bei neugeborenen Kälbern aufgetreten waren. Außerdem kam es auf diesem Hof periodisch zu Durchfällen und Gedeihstörungen bei jungen Katzen. Im Stuhl des Patienten und im Stuhl der Katze, mit der er Kontakt gehabt hatte, wurden Oozysten vonCryptosporidum sp. nachgewiesen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren die Kälber nicht infiziert.
