Abstract
This paper reviews the complicated interplay which may be involved in the retention of water and salt by the kidney. For the sake of brevity, it does not treat either the mechanisms which regulate the intake of water or the disposition of fluid throughout the body. The neurohumoral pathways by which a change in intravascular volume can effect a retention of water by the kidney receives particular attention. The difficulties in dissociating intrarenal from extrarenal determinants of salt and water excretion are considered in detail. Keywords
