Abstract
Adults of Rhagoletis pomonella were fed various diets containing carbohydrates, proteins or both, also non-protein nitrogenous substances and inorganic mineral salts, to detn. the influence of food on longevity and egg production. Carbohydrates in the form of sugars are essential for maintaining life; a N containing food is required for egg development. The greatest number of eggs was produced on a diet of 4 parts (by weight) of sucrose + one part each of yeast powder and Proteose-peptone. A continuous supply of water is also necessary. In addition to food, other factors of an unknown nature apparently affect egg production as was indicated by wide variation in results between the replicates of an expt. In general, more eggs were laid in the insectary than in the laboratory.
