Abstract
Current assessment of the epidemiology of coronary heart disease indicates a major role of environment in the evolution of this disease. Environmental factors that contribute to the incidence of the disease include dietary habits, cigarette smoking and physical activity. The present issue of the Journal contains an article incriminating coffee drinking as a factor in the development of coronary heart disease. The report of Jick et al. involves a study of coffee consumption by a large number of hospitalized subjects with a discharge diagnosis of myocardial infarction as compared with subjects hospitalized for other reasons.
