Abstract
Eight diabetic patients administered daily dosages of phenethylguanide (I) showed an elevation of the fasting blood lactic acid (n) concn., and increase in the blood I level after fruc-tose administration, and a slightly greater blood I increase alter lactate (III) administration. The blood concns. and urinary excretions of pyruvic acid were increased under the same circumstances but less marked. Increases in the plasma concn. and urinary excretion of citric acid were found in some subjects. These results are consistent with an effect of I on glucose (IV) and III metabolism in diabetic patients similar to that produced by I in tissues in vitro, namely an increased uptake of IV and an increased production of lactic acid. Keywords
