Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cariostatic effect of 0.05% Sn EDTA incorporated in sugar base chewing gum. A total of 503 children participated over a period of 2 years. One group chewed twice daily a placebo sugar gum; a second group chewed twice daily the same gum to which was added 0.05% Sn EDTA. The third group was a no gum supplied group for purposes of comparison. Those chewing the sugar base gum experienced a significant (36%, p < 0.01) increase in incremental caries in comparison with a no gum group. The Sn EDTA gum group showed no significant differences in caries increments in comparison to the no gum supplied group. Each stick of gum weighed 2.6 g ( ± 0.3) and contained approximately 1.5 g sucrose and 0.5 g glucose.
