Abstract
In a double-blind trial of 6 wk duration, 30 chronic asthmatic outpatients were treated with 5 mg tablets of fenoterol or terbutaline, 2-4 times daily. In pulmonary function tests on days 1, 21 and 42, there were no statistically significant differences between the 2 drugs in terms of mean increases in FEV1 [forced expiratory volume in 1 s] or in duration of effect. No decline in efficacy was seen after 6 wk of treatment. The incidence of cardiovascular and musculoskeletal side effects declined as the study progressed.
