Abstract
An expression has been derived for the free energy change occurring when a pure material solidifies at a highly undercooled, planar solid-liquid interface. This expression has been used to calculate corrected values for the nucleus-melt interfacial energy, γNL, from experimental data on homogeneous nucleation. The corrected values have been compared with existing interfacial energies derived from nucleation data using the conventional first-order approximation for the free energy of fusion. In the case of metals the corrected figures for γNL are only about 1% different from the uncorrected values; but for non-metals the correct values for γNL are as much as 15% less than those calculated using the approximate form for the free energy of fusion. Keywords
