Abstract
Factor analysis is a technique which can be usefully applied for a variety of research purposes. However, factors should only be interpreted when due consideration has been given to validity issues. Adequacy coefficients can be calculated for this purpose. These coefficients can be derived by calculating the cosines of the angles between variables’ or factors’ actual and theoretically expected locations within factor space. The use of adequacy coefficients during the process of instrument development is discussed. The development of an instrument to measure thinking interests provides a heuristic framework for the discussion. Keywords
