Indigenous and crossbred cattle—A comparison of resistance to ticks and implications for their strategic control in Zimbabwe

Abstract
A comparison of the tick resistance of indigenous Mashona and crossbred Afrikander×Sussex oxen following natural tick infestation indicated that significantly more African blue ticksBoophilus decoloratus were found on the crossbred than the indigenous cattle (P0,05). Les deux groupes de bovins ont été exposés àBabesia bigemina etTheileria taurotragi, comme l'ont révélé les taux élevés d'anticorps mis en évidence par le test d'immunofluorescence indirecte mais aucun anticorps d'Anaplasma marginale et deParva bovis n'a pu être décelé en dépit de la présence de leurs vecteurs.Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Hyalomma truncatum etH. marginatum rufipes ont montré une répartition saisonniêre. Les implications de ces observations en terme de stratégie de lutte contre les tiques ont été examinées. Un estudio comparativo para determinar la resistencia de bueyes criollos mashona y cruzados Afrikaander×Sussex, a la infestaciones naturales por garrapatas, indicó un mayor número de la garrapata azul africana,Boophilus decoloratus, en ganado cruzado que en criollo (P>0.05). Ambos grupos de animales fueron expuestos aBabesia bigemina y Theileria taurotragi, según se pudo comprobar por el alto nivel de anticuerpos encontrados mediante la prueba indirecta de anticuerpos fluorescentes, pero no se pudieron detectar anticuerpos deAnaplasma marginale yT. parva bovis, a pesar de la presencia de los vectores. Las garrapatasRhipicephalus appendiculatus, Hyalomma truncatum yH. marginatum rufipes, mostraron una distribución estacional. Se discute las implicaciones de estos hallazgos en términos del control de garrapatas.Keywords
