Abstract
The increased rate of aerobic metabolism that is associated with the stimulation of Na transport by aldosterone in the isolated bladder of the toad, Bufo marinus, is dependent upon the presence of Na in the mucosal bathing medium. Amphotericin B, which increases Na transport by reducing the permeability barrier to Na at the apical surface, mimics the metabolic effects of aldosterone in this tissue. The evidence demonstrates that the action of aldosterone is to increase the entry of Na into the transport pathway across the apical surfaces of the mucosal epithelial cells. The metabolic effects of aldosterone are secondary to the entry of Na into the tissue. Keywords
