Abstract
The relative polarizations of the absorption bands in the electronic spectra of the mono- and di-negative ions of biphenyl, terphenyl and quaterphenyl were determined by the same method as reported in a previous paper [1]. A qualitative discussion is given of the correlation between the electronic spectra of the molecule and ions of these polyphenyls. Both the spectra and semi-empirical m.o. calculations suggest that the polyphenyl ions possess very large electronic polarizabilities. Keywords
