Nonpancreatic Tumors Associated With Hypoglycemia

Abstract
HYPOGLYCEMIA associated with metabolic activity of nonpancreatic neoplasms has become a well-recognized syndrome. More than 100 patients with this disorder have been reported in the medical literature, the majority of papers appearing since 1955. The metabolic problems encountered with this syndrome have attracted the interest principally of internists and endocrinologists, and accordingly, few reports have appeared in the surgical literature even though the definitive management of the tumor is extirpation. Although recognition of the syndrome improves, the mechanism involved in the production of hypoglycemia is by no means clearly understood. The two patients discussed herein presented with tumors not previously reported in association with hypoglycemia, and therefore, considered desirable additions to the group of connective tissue tumors with hypoglycemia producing potential.
