The prospects for small scale irrigation in sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract
The importance of large-scale irrigation projects in the drought-prone areas of Africa needs no emphasis. But by their very nature, such schemes have to be the subject of negotiation between governments and take a considerable time to complete. This article draws attention to the fact that a multiplicity of smaller schemes, supported by non-governmental agencies, can also make a significant contribution.
