Abstract
Much previous work on the origin of creatine is discussed from the catabolic and synthetic standpoints. The authors treated 3 cases of progressive muscular dystrophy and 3 cases showing pseudohypertrophy and muscular atrophy. In some cases, the extra creatinuria produced by glycine feeding receded after a week so that by the end of 2-3 weeks, in spite of daily intake of 15 gm. glycine, creatine output returned to its original level. In most cases it took longer. Simultaneously with decrease of creatinuria the output of creatinine rose. One case so improved that the creatine excretion receded below the initial level, i.e., the metabolism approached normal (creatine tolerance changed from 70% to 33% elimination). The condition of the patients improved strikingly with these metabolic changes. Suspension of the glycine feeding caused disappearance of these changes in the creatinine economy within a few weeks. None of these results followed glycine feeding in 3 control cases of secondary muscular atrophy. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
