Abstract
Reports the observation of molecular Na2+ ion yield when Na vapour in the density range 1012-1013 cm-3 is irradiated by a pulsed laser with intensity 105 W cm-2. In addition to an intense ion yield already observed when the laser is tuned to the 3S1/2-3P1/2,3/2 atomic resonances, a complex structure is revealed in the Na2+ ion yield when the laser wavelength is scanned in the range 5800-6150 AA. A critical discussion of possible off-resonance ionisation mechanisms is proposed. Keywords
