Abstract
The 3 spp. of the Entomophthorales that cause human disease are Basidiobolus haptosphorus, Conidiobolus coronatus and C. incongruus. A brief characterization of the Entomophthorales provides a basis for understanding their broader relationships. Although B. haptosporus is generally considered the sole etiologic species of the genus, further work is necessary to elucidate fully the taxonomy within the genus. The systematics and biology of the ubiquitous C. coronatus played a key role in separating the genera Entomophthora and Conidiobolus. Sporulation can present problems in identifying the 3 etiologic agents.
