Abstract
To determine whether products of the reaction of uveitis appear in the circulation, serums from 150 patients were examined for antibody to double-stranded RNA and DNA. With the use of an assay based on antibody-dependent binding of radioactive polynucleotides to a solid-phase absorbent, the uveitis specimens were found to have levels of antibody higher than normal in 37 per cent with respect to double-stranded RNA and in 24 per cent with respect to double-stranded DNA. Since the specificities of these serum antibodies are similar to those found in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, some similar immunologic or infectious mechanisms (or both) may characterize the two disorders. Keywords
