Inhibitory Effect of Preirradiation Saccharin Habituation on Conditioned Avoidance Behavior

Abstract
40 male and female albino rats were assigned to four treatment groups with 10 subjects in each group. Three groups were given a 6-day period of habituation to a 0.1% saccharin solution with an interpolated interval of 0, 3, or 6 days on tap water between the end of the 6-day habituation period and radiation exposure. The control group had no preirradiation habituation to the saccharin solution. All groups were permitted to drink the 0.1% saccharin solution for 30 minutes and then were exposed to whole-body irradiation for 15 minutes (total exposure dose of 102 r in air). Preirradiation habituation to saccharin solution had a significant inhibitory effect on conditioned avoidance behavior. Intervals of 3 and 6 days on tap water between the end of the habituation period and radiation exposure showed mixed effects over days, but all habituated groups were significantly different from the nonhabituated group except the 6-day interval group on the first post-irradiation day.
