Abstract
A theoretical analysis of a model for the emission of radiation from InSb at very low temperatures is presented. The model assumed a depletion region, such as would be caused by non‐Ohmic contacts, and a bulk region. The presence of a magnetic field causes different quantization conditions in the two regions which can give rise to current instabilities and radiation emission. In the case of parallel magnetic and electric fields, the wave function is solved ``exactly'' (neglecting losses) by matching boundary conditions at the interface between the two regions. In the cases of cross magnetic and electric fields, the Hamiltonian is transformed into the familiar double harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian and well‐known results applied. Finally, the threshold for instabilities is calculated by means of a photon generation and loss rate equation. This publication has 20 references indexed in Scilit:
