Abstract
Until recently, localized tissue trauma was considered the prime factor in the production of subcutaneous nodules in rheumatic subjects. The possibility that these lesions were "manifestations of the uninhibited action of proteinases on mesenchymal tissue" has its basis on the presence in human and animal sera of a proteolytic enzyme system similar to trypsin. The occurrence of subcutaneous "nodules" following a single subcutaneous injection of trypsin would seem to lend support to this thesis. Keywords
