Abstract
A series of papers has been published which are concerned with the investigation of the nature of the anthocyanins present in a variety of plants and in various organs, including flowers, fruits and leaves (Robinson and Robinson 1931, 1932a, 1933, 1934; Lawrence, Price, Robinson and Robinson 1938; Price and Sturgess 1938). The methods employed served to identify the fundamental anthocyanidins and in most cases the sugar type of the anthocyanins, but the sugars themselves were not identified. Thus glucoside is a term that includes galactoside in the sequel. The large number examined appears to justify a general review of the results, and in our opinion certain inferences may be drawn from the observed distribution of the anthocyanin types. Keywords
