Abstract
This review extends that by Yorke (1977) in this journal reviewing staff development in tertiary education. It pays particular attention to the university sector in Britain but also considers more general developments in other institutions and examines the pros and cons of staff development. Key developments in Britain are the Hale Report (1964) and the 1973 agreement between the Association of University Teachers and the Universities Authorities Panel on probation and training. Part II will report developments in other countries. Since the literature related to training is very diverse, to help structure it it is covered in three main sections. The first section deals with the development of institutional structures, the response of the universities, the pressure exerted by various bodies and the official reports. The following section deals with the educational aspects of training, the nature of training, training methods and the content of training. A final section will follow dealing with international developments and publications.
