Abstract
That varicella and zoster have the same origin has been known since the work of Von Bokay in Budapest late in the last century. The final proof was obtained by Weller,1 who demonstrated that both diseases were caused by a single virus, the varicella–zoster virus. It appeared that the virus became latent after varicella infection and was later reactivated to produce zoster, an inference that has been confirmed by endonuclease analysis of viral DNA.2 The pathogenesis of zoster is only partly understood,3 and such understanding as we have depends to some extent on analogy with its cousin, recurrent herpes simplex. . . .Keywords
