Abstract
Field and culture observations were made on G. johnstonii Dawson (Gigartinales; Rhodophyta) known only from the Gulf of California. The very rapid life history and growth in culture (24-52 wk for a completed cycle) and ease of vegetative regeneration indicate a potential for use in mariculture. Two complete cycles were observed in culture without any deviation from an isomorphic gametophyte/tetrasporophyte alternation. In a 3rd cycle, however, one female became monoecious and self-fertile, producing viable carpospores. In addition, a male plant produced spermatangia and tetrasporangia. Viable tetraspores formed both male and female plants. Observations on the structure of reproductive organs and carrageenan content of field-collected plants are presented.
