MOUSE SALIVARY GLAND VIRUS INFECTIONS1

Abstract
Mouse embryo tissue culture (METC) was used to assay mouse salivary gland virus (MSGV) in a series of experiments which demonstrated the following. Evidence of current infection was found in only 3 animals of 263 commercially available Swiss Webster mice which were tested. These 3 were pregnant. Animals acquired infection from inoculated cage mates. Infection followed intranasal instillation and oral ingestion of virus. Viremia occurred after intravenous inoculation in fatal and subclinical infections between the 3d and 7th days. Neutralizing antibody (assayed in METC) appeared in low titer after inoculation of large quantities of virus, and when passively acquired by the sucklings of immunized mothers protected them against challenge inoculation. Pregnant animals inoculated during the 3d week of gestation incurred an increased incidence of aborted, macerated or resorbed fetuses, but virus was not recovered from these concepti.
