Abstract
The blood changes following double nephrectomy were studied, to determine if the acid intoxication which appears in adrenal insufficiency and similarly in uremia is primarily of renal origin. The chief findings were diminution of chlorides, increase in phosphates, sulphates, and urea, and a small but definite increase in blood sugar. The decrease of chlorides compensates for increase of sulphates and phosphates and there is no definite acid intoxication. These symptoms are in contrast to effects of double adrenalectomy previously reported, and indicate that the causal factor in the acid intoxication of adrenal insufficiency is extra-renal in origin.
