Abstract
Summary Five cases of chronic rheumatic disease with joint changes have been described. In all cases electromyographic examination showed degenerative potentials indicative of lesion of the lower motor neurone. The pathological spontaneous activity was registered in muscles clinically judged to be atrophic, as well as in non-atrophic muscles, and before symptoms and signs of an articular lesion became apparent. One case was accompanied by neurological deficiency phenomena ascribed to chronic inflammation (rheumatic) directly involving the central nervous system (the spinal medulla) together with degeneration of the neuromuscular system. Keywords
