Testosterone Metabolism in Various Tissues of the Intact and Inflamed Rabbit Eye

Abstract
[4–14C]-testosterone in rabbit cornea, iris, retina and lens is metabolised in vitro by specific steroid oxidoreductases. The main product was 4-androstene-3,17-dione followed by 5α-dihydrotestosterone, androstanediols, androstanedione, epitestosterone and androsterone. The metabolic activity of vitreous was very low and practically no metabolism occurred in aqueous. Inflammation due to Escherichia coli endotoxin significantly decreased testosterone metabolism in cornea and iris.
