Abstract
In a series of 400 stools from healthy adults examined for the presence of K. pneumoniae there were 10 samples which yielded organisms with cultural and morph. characteristics similar to known strains of K. pneumoniae. Of these 10, 3 were mucoid, and 7 were smooth. One smooth organism showed agglutination with type B antiserum, one smooth strain gave capsular swelling with type C antiserum, and one mucoid strain gave capsular swelling with type D antiserum. A tentative diagnosis of K. pneumoniae can be given culturally from Endo''s medium within 24 hours. Biochemical reactions are variable and pathogenicity for mice is unreliable. Although a culture may fail to type with specific type serum A, B, C, or D, there still remains a general group X (Juliannelle).
