Abstract
The tendency under field conditions for settlingBalanus balanoideslarvae to space out from conspecific adults but not from adults of other species is reaffirmed. Explanations are advanced for the opposite conclusions reached recently by other workers. The general avoidance byB. balanoideslarvae of settling on top of older barnacles is examined. It is suggested that there must be a strong inhibiting influence, so far unexplained.
