OVARIAN AND PLACENTAL HORMONES

Abstract
A review emphasizing recent direct experimental evidence concerning the partial isolation and animal reactions of an essential hormone. Characteristic ovarian replacement effects in ovariectomized animals have been demonstrated for this active substance. These reactions include (1) hyperemia and growth in all parts of the reproductive tract and mammary glands, (2) secretion by uterine glands and the epithelium of the uterine tubes, (3) typical contraction rhythm of uterine and tubal musculature, (4) congestion, swelling and other external signs of oestrus, (5) typical female mating reactions (in rats and mice), and (6) scanty menstruation (in monkeys) after injections had been stopped. The essential steps in chemical preparation and the properties of the most highly purified products are reviewed. No differentiation, either chemical or physiological, has yet been made between material from ovarian and placental sources.
