Abstract
The planning framework employed in the use of computer programs for planning the cut from forests is discussed. A criterion of performance such as present net worth must be defined, and an appropriate discount rate selected. The required pattern of wood production is specified as a set of constraints on the system. Constraints may be set by social objectives also. As the effects of risk and uncertainty are due mainly to the prediction of distant future market situations, these effects can be minimised by keeping the planning period as short as possible. A one-rotation planning period with zero growing stock at the end may be appropriate for the management of large forests. Keywords
