Abstract
The quantification of chromosomal aberrations, mutations and neoplastic transformations induced by heavy charged particles meets with considerable experimental and conceptual difficulties which are related to the specific pattern of energy deposition. These problems are discussed on the background of current ideas on track structure, and some new experimental results are analysed. Keywords
