Abstract
We have observed the modes of a CdSxSe1−x diffused waveguide using prisms to couple 6328‐Å radiation in and out of the guiding layer. The mode lines could be separated and their angular dispersion in air was measured. The diffusion profile of the CdSxSe1−x surface was determined by Auger electron spectroscopy and ion milling techniques. The refractive‐index profile obtained from this procedure was well fitted by three linear segments. The number of modes and the mode spectrum were calculated for this profile using the WKB approximation. Good agreement was obtained between experiment and theory. This publication has 16 references indexed in Scilit:
