Abstract
For an optical guide with index of refraction having a small exponential variation superimposed on a constant background value, such as is found in guides made by diffusing Se into CdS, the wave equation may be solved exactly. The solutions and characteristic equations for determining the possible TE and TM modes are given and the properties of the modes are discussed. Keywords
