mesoInositol in the lens of mammalian eyes

Abstract
Free mesoinositol is found in the lens of several species of animal, ranging in concentration from about 50 mg/100g of lens in the rat to about 500 mg/lOOg of lens in the sheep and the human. This is higher than that recorded for any other animal tissue. It is present in the aqueous humor (rabbit, cattle) at a much lower concentration. The concentration of mesoinositol in the lens of the very young animal (cattle, rabbit) is lower than in the adult. There is no evidence of any combined form of mesoinositol in the lens. mesolnositol is virtually absent from the lens of a rabbit made completely opaque by means of X-rays, but limitations in the accuracy of its estimation do not permit conclusions as to the stage of cataract development at which the diminution begins.
