Changes in lens during the formation of X-ray cataract in rabbits. 3. Phosphates

Abstract
The effect of irradiation on the organic phosphate compounds in the lens of the very young rabbit was studied by the enzymic method of Slater (1953). No change could be detected in the high-energy phosphate groups of ATP and ADP, or in hexose mono-phosphates, hexose diphosphate, phosphoglycerate or inorganic phosphate within a few days of irradiation. The amount of creatine phosphate in lens is too small for satisfactory enzymic determination. A fall in glutathione was detected 24 hours after irradiation. The hexose phosphate and triose phosphate fraction determined enzymically is considerably less than the same fraction when determined chemically.
