Abstract
The effect of fusicoccin (FC), potassium and sodium was tested on artificially aged wheat seeds. The treatments were unable to stimulate significantly the germination, contrary to the results found in naturally aged wheat. When the embryos isolated from the artificially aged seeds were germinated, they grew very poorly and showed a marked decrease in proton extrusion with respect to both the unaged and the naturally aged ones. Moreover, FC and K+ did not stimulate their germinability unlike the naturally aged embryos. The changes are interpreted in terms of the effects of different ageing conditions on seed performance and particularly on cell membrane state. Keywords
