An inversion of chromosome 2 that distinguishes between Bornean and Sumatran orangutans

Abstract
A comparison between 2 types of chromosome 2 in Bornean and Sumatran orangutans indicates that either one can be derived from the other by a pericentric inversion. The question arises, as to which of these can be considered the ancestral form. The frequency of these 2 chromosomes differs significantly between the 2 populations. Each chromosome type should be designated as the Bornean and Sumatran chromosome 2 in Pongo pygmaeus rather than referring to them as normal and variant chromosomes. The Bornean chromosome 2 might be the original chromosome of the species P. pygmaeus, whereas the Sumatran chromosome type has been derived from it by a pericentric inversion.
